A Brief History

A Brief History of Digital Asset Management

Digital Asset Management or D.A.M. solutions were born out of necessity back in the late 1980's. Despite advancements, the primary motivators for its adoption remain; to catalog, search, find, retrieve and securely share digital files quickly and easily with the people that need them.

One of the early adopters was the graphics or print production industry. It is in this market that the personnel of Otec Solutions first embraced DAM technology and started on the path to provide client solutions that shortened production cycles and reduced costs.

Naturally, early versions of DAM software catered to the requirements of this growing market and as such limited the adoption to a possible broader range of users. File type and creator cataloging filters for Photoshop and Quark Express are two examples of market focused integration and support tools that favored graphics production.

Today there are hundreds of products each with their own specific market features and benefits, and accordingly, Otec has sold installations of DAM solutions in a wide variety of environments including:

  • Hospital media services and medical imaging departments
  • Industrial equipment manufacturers sales & marketing departments
  • Travel agencies
  • Real estate management firms
  • University research departments
  • Government Agencies
  • Retailers
  • Photography studios
  • Design firms
  • Advertising agencies
  • Book and magazine publishers
  • Service bureaus
  • Electronic prepress firms
  • Printing and cross-media publishing companies

The common denominator for all of the above installations was the alignment of product features with client's requirements, present and future.
